Why People Don't Leave Organizations — They Leave Experiences

Here’s what I’ve learned after thousands of exit interviews and employee conversations.

People leave experiences.

Think about it:

  • A role with no path forward

  • Effort that goes unrecognized

  • Unclear expectations

  • Toxic meetings or inconsistent communication

  • A culture that says “we care,” but behaves like “just do your job”

These are experiences. And over time, they compound — slowly nudging your best people toward the door.

On the flip side?
Positive, empowering, generous experiences anchor people. They build belonging, motivation, and meaning.

Leadership Action

Audit the experiences you’re creating.

Ask yourself:

  • What does it feel like to work for me?

  • How do my people experience growth, feedback, recognition, and community?

And then — go a step further.

Ask your team these two questions:

  1. What’s one thing about working here that energizes you?

  2. What’s one thing that drains you?

Let them answer.
Then:
Listen.
No defending. No explaining. Just generous, open-hearted listening.

This single act of generosity — giving your people your attention — can spark game-changing momentum.
